The Alfama is Lisbon's oldest quarter. The name can be derived from the Arabic word Alfamm: meaning "mouth". Alfama represents an organic weave of old cobble stone streets, meandering passages, and swirling tram routes. Here, the music named Fado was born: a melancholic form of music based around the experience of longing. And with the longing comes a quiet stillness, in the midst of the shouting and laughter, between neighbours across narrow streets.
